Dear students and friends!

You’ve made it! Whether you’ve just arrived or are settling in, welcome to your new life in Spain. Now, it’s time to adjust, explore, and start enjoying everything this experience has to offer. This month, we’re sharing helpful tips to make your first few weeks smoother — and a lot more fun.

UNDERSTANDING THE SPANISH WAY OF LIFE

Adjusting to a new culture takes time, but here’s what you need to know to feel at home faster:

Schedules Are Different

  • Lunch is around 2–3pm, dinner after 9pm

  • Many shops close mid-day and all-day Sunday

Tip: Do your errands before Saturday evening!

Public Transport Is Excellent

  • Get your Abono Joven for unlimited travel

  • Use apps like EMT Madrid, Citymapper, and Renfe Cercanías

Tip: Night buses run after the Metro closes at 1:30am

Healthcare Made Simple

  • Use private insurance networks

  • If you are from Europe bring your EHIC Card

  • Pharmacies are helpful for non-emergencies

Tip: We can help translate or book appointments if needed!

Pay with Your Phone Everywhere

  • Apple Pay, Google Pay, and contactless cards are widely accepted

  • Cash is rarely needed but good to carry just in case

Tip: Avoid ATMs with extra fees — look for your bank's

Cultural Tips to Keep in Mind

  • Two kisses to greet (socially), smaller personal space

  • Dress nicely, even for casual outings

  • Tipping is optional but appreciated

Tip: Don’t be shy — people appreciate the effort to speak Spanish
