As summer approaches, it’s time for many students to start one of the most important (and often stressful) parts of their move to Spain: finding a place to live.
Whether you’re moving to Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia or any other city, here are a few essential things to keep in mind when searching for student housing:
Start Early
The rental market moves fast, especially between June and September. Start your search at least 6–8 weeks before your move-in date.
Know Your Options
Most international students choose one of the following:
A room in a shared flat (the most common and budget-friendly option)
A student residence with meals and services included
A studio or private apartment (more expensive, more independence)
A homestay with a local family (great for language and cultural immersion)
Understand the Costs
Besides monthly rent, be ready to pay:
1–2 months’ deposit
Agency fees (sometimes one month’s rent + TAX)
Utilities, internet, and community fees
Prepare Your Documents
Landlords often ask for:
A copy of your passport/ID
Proof of university enrollment / CV
A guarantor or proof of income/scholarship
And remember, always read the rental contract carefully, it’s often in Spanish, and it’s important to understand what you're signing.
Be Careful
Sadly, online scams exist. Avoid paying anything before visiting the flat (or having someone you trust do it) and use well-known platforms.
